A bus from line 103 ran over and killed a 78-year-old retiree last Thursday in the Villa Madero neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The victim was identified as Olga Susana Cornachiolli, who was crossing the pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Vélez Sarsfield and Pedro de Mendoza streets when the driver of the bus from the Transportes Quirno Costa company struck her, causing her to die at the scene.
The bus driver, identified as 25-year-old Pedro Domínguez, was arrested and charged with "culpable homicide," a crime that carries a penalty of six months to five years in prison according to the Penal Code. According to security camera footage, the victim was crossing correctly when she was hit.
In statements to the Argentine News Agency, Alejandro Uda, the deceased's nephew, highlighted that his aunt was returning from shopping like she did every day, and emphasized that she bore no responsibility for the tragic event. Uda mentioned that the driver stopped 40 meters after the accident because passengers warned him, but the breathalyzer test was negative.
Additionally, Alejandro remembered Olga as a fighter, who took care of her two sisters, aged 80 and 90, with mobility issues. The victim's nephew noted that there is no traffic light at the corner where the accident occurred, which could have contributed to the tragedy.
